Kingdom of Serbia
The Principality of Serbia (1815-1882), was effectively independent from the Ottoman Empire since 1867. It was internationally recognized in 1878 and became a Kingdom in 1882, under Milan I (1882-1889). In 1889, Milan I abdicated in favor of his son, Alexander I (1889-1903). After Alexander I’s assassination Peter I assumed the throne (1903-1918) until he became King of the King of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (later known as Yugoslavia).
The Serbian currency, the Dinar (100 para = 1 dinar) was first minted in silver in 1875 and in gold in 1882. Coins were minted under Milan I and Peter I, but not under Alexander I.
Serbian coinage reflects the change of Milan Obrenović from head of the Principality of Serbia, to the King of Serbia.
