Provisional Government of Lombardy and the Republic of Venice

The Provisional Government of Lombardy and the Provisional Government of Venice are two separate and related revolutionary states of 1848-1849. Both were formed by revolutionaries in the Austrian-held Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia.

Provisional Government of Lombardy

The Provisional Government of Lombardy existed from March 1848 to August 1849. It was formed by revolutionaries in Milan when that city rebelled from the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, which was ruled by Austria.

Provisional Government of Venice

The Provisional Government of Venice, aka the Republic of San Marco, existed from March 1848 to August 1849. It extended through the former Republic of Venice, centered in Venice. The territory was re-absorbed into the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia until it was ultimately annexed into the united Kingdom of Italy in 1866.

The first issuance of the 5 lire refers to the date of the revolt (22 March 1848) an to a united Italy (“Unione Italiana”) — apparently minted in June 1848 (here). In August 1848, the Republic of Venice was re-declared. The date 11 August 1848 is reflected in roman numerals on the 20 lire and the second issuance of the 5 lire. Unconfirmed sources indicate the second issuance was minted after November 1848 (here).
