Bulgaria

Bulgaria had been largely autonomous as a Principality since 1878. Kingdom (or Tzardom) of Bulgaria formally declared independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1908.

Alexander the first Prince of Bulgaria (1879-1886), abdicated following a military coup. Ferdinand, a German prince, became Prince of Bulgaria and later its Tzar.

The coinage, lev, was first minted in 1881.

In the 1960s, restrikes of the independence commemorative coinage (1912 20 leva and 100 leva) were officially struck.
