Albania

Albania became independent of the Ottoman Empire in 1912. Initially formed as a constitutional monarchy (Principality of Albania), it became the Albanian Republic from 1925-1928. The Albanian Kingdom was declared in 1928 under King Zog I. Ahmet Zog had previously been prime minister of the Principality (1922-1924) and President of the Republic (1925-1928).

The currency, the Albanian Lek (5 Lek = 1 Franga) was introduced in 1925, with the first coins minted 1926.

Mintage of all gold Albanian coins is extremely limited (6,000 or fewer). There are a number of pattern coins in all denominations.
